BDO Rotorua & Verda NZ

How BDO Spicers Rotorua helps the Verda NZ team to be the best

Verda New Zealand is an integrated wood products company, based in Rotorua and a client of BDO Spicers Rotorua. Known as Key Lumber Company until April of this year, Verda supplies the New Zealand and overseas markets (Japan, China and Australia) with a range of wood products including decking, framing and retaining wall timbers. They have two brands; V3 wood products and Verda New Zealand Outdoor.

100% Kiwi Made
The team focuses on quality and customer service as well as providing a sustainable, innovative product to the building industry. The company is 100% Kiwi owned and operated with 60 full time staff and 40 staff employed through the Napier sawmill of which they hold 33% ownership. In New Zealand you can buy Verda’s products through Carters, ITM, Mitre 10 and Placemakers as well as direct and the name is well recognised in the building industry.

An accounting relationship that's grown
Verda’s accountants and business advisers are Judith Stanway, Stephen Graham and the BDO Spicers Rotorua team. Judith has attended the Verda board meetings since inception in April 2004 and as such is a part of the company’s extended management team. She assists with governance and strategic advice, while Stephen and his manager Kim Billington look after the day-to-day accounting needs of the business. BDO Spicers Rotorua looks after Verda’s accounting, tax and business advisory needs as well as working closely with CFO Jo Pitkethley on the day to day accounts of the company.

When asked “why BDO”, CEO Grant Butterworth honestly replies “we’ve never used anyone else!”. With Judith’s close involvement with the business, the BDO Spicers Rotorua team has been able to develop a deep understanding of the company and its products, and to grow its service as Verda has grown.

BDO covers all the bases
BDO Spicers Rotorua also has all the bases that Verda needs covered: business advice, due diligence and valuation expertise, export market understanding, day to day accounting, tax and governance capability. So there’s not really any need to go elsewhere.

“I believe as we have grown, our company has grown in importance to BDO and we certainly get that feeling from their team,” says Grant. “They’re always responsive to what we need, proactive when working on projects and understand our business. BDO is part of the furniture, but in a good way! They’re open to new ideas and suggest new ways of doing things as well.”

Part of the furniture?
And BDO Spicers is very proud to be part of Verda’s furniture! It’s a relationship that they enjoy and that Judith, Stephen and the team value. They’re immensely proud of what the company has achieved and are looking forward to continuing to help Grant and the team to grow. “Grant and the team at Verda are so passionate about what they’re doing, it’s impossible not to get caught up and excited by their enthusiasm,” says Judith.

“They produce a beautiful, high quality New Zealand product. Our aim is to continue to be able to look after all aspects of their business advisory and accounting needs, and to partner their company to ongoing success around the world and here at home.”
